The infrared spectroscopy market is making a transition from large, expensive, general use, lab spectrometers to smaller, less expensive, but still flexible, portable systems and even further to real miniature, chip-sized spectrometer systems dedicated to a certain application. Furthermore it is a general trend that infrared spectroscopy is leaving the lab and entering the production floor for on-line, real-time process monitoring.
 
Part of this evolution is due to the development of NIR diode array spectrometers. These are spectrometers that are based on linear NIR detector arrays. Linear arrays have the advantage that a full spectrum can be measured in one shot, eliminating the need for moving parts and strongly reducing the time delay that is inherent to scanning dispersive spectrometer systems. At the same time prices of these systems will go down, allowing for further integration of IR spectroscopy into more and more applications, such as in:
 
Food & Agriculture: quality inspection; determination of moisture, sugar, alcohol, fat, protein, caffeine, and menthol contents
Plastics: identification and sorting
Glass: identification; color tolerance and coating thickness measurement
Textile: web Inspection; quality control of dyeing
Chemical: identification of polymers, gasses, fuels; determination of octane numbers and oxygenates; control of polymer blend
Cosmetics & pharmaceutics: identification; ingredient determination; detection of packaging materials; incoming inspection of raw materials
