Infrared technology in all its modern facets, presenting an advanced method for imaging and analysing hidden objects, is shaping up as a valuable contribution to realising the goal of seeing what is there, even in "vision zero" environments: in dark nights on the road.
Driver assistance systems should improve the driver's sight at night, a time with a three times higher accident rate compared to daytime. Night vision systems based on NIR image capturing operate as active sensors utilising the car's headlights. Such active systems give a much better depiction of the scene enfolding ahead illuminated by the headlight beams than mere visual observation. Another step further is passive LWIR technology, because it captures the temperature radiation of warm-blooded living creatures, humans as well as animals. Passive imaging systems can look four times farther ahead, providing images from much larger distances.
