OCT

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging method that is very similar to ultrasound probing techniques. Instead of sound, it uses low-coherence light to provide cross-sectional images of tissue structure in high resolution, into the millimeter regime.

 

With longer wavelengths in the IR spectrum and the availability of InGaAs detectors and cameras, OCT scanners based on SWIR wavelengths are able to penetrate much deeper into human tissue compared to those of visible wavelengths.

 

Today, OCT is predominantly used in the medical sector, where it has become a standard non-invasive biomedical analysis technique yielding a detail-rich cross-sectional image of living tissue. It is commonly used in eye scans to examine the retina, revealing its distinctive layers. This allows doctors to map and measure their thickness, and also to spot potential damages on the tissues.

 

Beyond medical applications, the use of OCT is spreading with breath-taking velocity and advances in the industrial market. Promising industrial applications of OCT are emerging as cost-efficient quality improvement tools for in-line inspection of multi-layered objects in manufacturing processes. For these tasks, advanced high-speed InGaAs cameras are universally suited.

Thermal SWIR

InGaAs shortwave infrared (SWIR) cameras usually work in a reflective imaging mode where the camera detects light reflected from the object investigated. However, SWIR cameras can also detect infrared radiation emitted by hot objects with temperatures above 300°C.

 

Some examples include industrial furnace monitoring, glass bottle inspection, detection of slag impurities in molten metal and hot mold inspection. In glass bottle inspection, using a SWIR camera in the hot end of the process allows you to rework the rejected material and in that way to reduce the scrap. The ability to through glass with SWIR infrared camera also allows you to inspect inner and outer surfaces.
