Forest Fire Detection

The destructive capabilities of fire need little to no introduction. Every year, billions of dollars are lost due to the damages caused by accidents or natural occurrences such as forest fires. Timely location and handling of a fire when it occurs help prevent further, and sometimes irreversible damage to businesses or the environment.

 

Infrared imaging can be a useful tool to combat such incidents. Visible cameras can efficiently detect smoke, but are unable to locate the source of the fire. SWIR and uncooled LWIR cameras can penetrate smoke, easily locating the source of the fire for firefighting teams to swiftly extinguish the fire.

 

Thermal cameras not only help to detect sources of fires but can also determine if there are people present in the scene. This saves valuable time crucial in search & rescue operations.

Situational Awareness

The need to be aware of your surroundings can stem from purposes such as defence and security or to ensure safe operations.

 

The key focus of infrared imaging in these cases is to enhance vision capabilities during unfavourable weather or low-light conditions. Snow, rain, and fog can be penetrated when imaging through various infrared wavelengths. Potential hazards such as power lines, defective landing lights, unauthorized vehicles on the runways, etc. can be easily seen and identified when using infrared vision, either in thermal long-wave infrared, or short wave infrared, or a combination of both.
