Traffic accidents occur three times as often during the night compared to the day. A contributing factor is the hindered visibility of the driver due to poor lighting conditions. Driver vision enhancement systems use infrared imaging to increase the vision capability of the operator for better or safer operations.
Infrared (IR) imaging technology provides numerous advantages over visible imaging. One common use of IR imaging is its ability to image even in low light conditions. IR imaging also enhances vision capabilities during unfavourable weather conditions. Snow, rain, and fog can be penetrated when imaging through different wavelengths. Thermal imaging is also able to indicate the presence of warm objects appearing before a background (surroundings). This provides an early warning to the driver of a possible danger on the road.
